The return of the rustic style in the interior and exterior design sounds the death knell of a new trend. Comfortable and looking good, pallet decorations and furniture tend to dethrone the industrial furniture swarming the market. Besides the fact that the use of pallets breathes a wind of atypical chic in our homes, they are especially less expensive and can even be easily built by yourself. So, without further ado, let’s dive into this blog and learn some of the things you need to know about making a pellet bed.

Step 1: Make the bed plan

As with any construction project, this step is not to be taken lightly. Making a bed plan means drawing the final look of your pallet bed. Be careful; this sketch must be made taking into account a few points, including:

    • The length and width of the bed frame
    • The dimensions and number of pallets at your disposal
    • The number of people
    • The design and layout of the room
    • The surface of the room.

Generally, for a 160×200 cm bed, you need:

    • 2 pallets of 80 cm wide
    • 1 full pallet of 120 cm and another one cut of 80 cm lengthwise.

There are 4 types of pallet beds:

    • A high-standing bed equivalent to a King size bed with the frame and the headboard
    • A bed on the floor
    • A bed with integrated storage
    • A retractable bed with an integrated light fixture.

Good to know: for good quality pallets, don’t hesitate to contact a specialist or a company that specializes in the supply of handling pallets.

Step 2: adjust the dimensions of the pallets

If it is not necessary to cut the pallets to get the bed frame, go directly to step number 3. In which case, here’s how to do it:

    • Mark the cutline
    • Cut the pallets with a jigsaw.

Step number 3: sand and clean the pallets

To do this:

    • Sand the entire surface of the pallets with an abrasive. The goal is to obtain a smooth surface
    • Clean the surface with a stiff brush, soapy water, and a microfiber cloth
    • Let dry overnight or while it dries.

Step 4: Assemble the pallets

To form the width of the bed:

    • Turn the pallets over
    • Place 2 whole pallets edge to edge
    • Position 2 mounting plates and mark the marks for the screws
    • Screw the plates with a screwdriver
    • Do the same with 2 other pallets. For the rest:
    • Bring the 2 parts together and adjust them.
    • Fix them with 4 plates.

Step 5: Paint the structure

For this penultimate step, it is important to choose colors that will not clash with the style of the room. Dark gray is the color in vogue for the summer of 2023; a good idea to dig for your future bed in pallets. To paint the surface effectively:

    • Start with the underside of the bed first.
    • Apply the first coat and let it dry for the time indicated
    • Apply a second coat and let it dry as well, but a little longer than the first time. The goal is for the wood to soak in both coats of paint sufficiently.
    • Then, turn the structure over and apply two successive coats of paint in the same way.
    • Let it dry.

Step 6: Decorate your bed with pallets

By doing some research on the internet, you will find several good ideas to dress up your bed. It is also possible to add some accessories such as:

    • Lanterns under or on the headboard of the bed
    • Green plants of more than 69 cm on each side of the bed
    • A small pallet bookcase at the foot of the bed.
