 Formica is a smooth, shiny surface that does not adhere well to paint if applied directly. However, it is possible to paint Formica as long as the surface is prepared correctly.

 Before painting Formica, clean and degrease the surface, sand, and then apply a preparatory undercoat.

 What paint to choose to paint Formica

 To paint Formica, you have the choice of using acrylic paint (water-based) or glycerol paint (solvent-based) with a gloss or satin finish.

 It is necessary to apply an undercoat for tiles or a suitable coating beforehand, which will allow the paint to adhere to the Formica.

 Choose the undercoat according to the paint you are applying:

 – If you are applying acrylic paint, choose a water-based undercoat.

 – If you are applying glycerin paint, choose a solvent-based undercoat.

 Materials for Painting Formica

Brush
 Paint tray
 Sanding paper
 Alkaline detergent
 Cleaning gloves
 Sponge + Cloth
 Tile underlayment
 Sanding block

 1. Clean the surface

 Clean the surface and degrease it thoroughly.

 – In a bucket or basin, mix warm water and alkaline detergent (St. Mark’s type).

 – Wash the furniture or Formica surface with a sponge.

 – Rinse with clear water.

 – Let dry.

 When the surface is dry, degrease the Formica by wiping with a cloth soaked in vinegar or acetone.

 Note: Wear household gloves and ventilate the room if you degrease the Formica with acetone.

 2. Sand the surface

 Lightly sand the Formica to increase the adhesion of the surface.

 – Use fine-grit sandpaper.

 – Sand in small circular motions.

 – Don’t press too hard or insist on the same spot; you risk digging the surface.

 – Clean the dust with a damp sponge.

 3. Apply an undercoat

 Once the surface is sanded and clean, apply an undercoat or primer with a brush, you can use a roller if the surface to be painted is large.

 – Mix the undercoat so that it is uniform.

 – Apply with a brush or roller:

 ◦ Load the roller or brush with paint, and don’t forget to wring it out.

 ◦ Paint in vertical stripes and crisscross the passes by painting horizontal stripes.

 – Let dry for the time indicated on the package.

 – Apply a second coat if necessary:

 ◦ Very lightly sand the first coat with fine-grit sandpaper (80).

 ◦ Apply the second coat in the same manner as the first coat and allow it to dry.

 Tip: To store rollers or brushes between the application of two undercoats without having to wash them and without them drying out, wrap them tightly with plastic food wrap or wrap them with several sheets of newspaper.

 When the undercoat is dry, paint the surface with a brush or roller.

 – Stir the paint with a stick to blend the color.

 – If painting with a brush:

 ◦ Dip the brush vertically into the pot without fully dipping the bristles.

 ◦ Squeeze out excess paint by running the brush over the edge of the jar.

 ◦ Hold the brush with your entire hand to paint.

 – If painting with a roller:

 ◦ Pour the paint into a paint tray.

 ◦ Dip the roller sleeve halfway into the paint to load it.

 ◦ Wring out the roller sleeve by pressing it lightly on a spinning rack.

 ◦ Lightly press the roller onto the surface to be painted and move it to paint.

 – Paint vertical stripes.

 – Crisscross the passes by painting horizontal stripes.

 – Smooth the paint by moving the brush or roller (without loading them with paint) up and down.

 – Let the paint dry for the time indicated on the paint can.

 A second coat of paint may be required to achieve the desired color.

 – Once the first coat of paint is dry, lightly sand it with fine sandpaper.

 – Apply a second coat of paint in the same manner as the first.

 Tip: To store rollers or brushes between coats of paint without having to wash them and without them drying out, wrap them tightly with plastic wrap or wrap them in several sheets of newspaper.

5. Clean the painting equipment

It’s essential to clean the equipment when you’re done painting.

If you have applied a waterborne paint:

– clean brushes, rollers, or other equipment with warm soapy water;

– Once you have removed all traces of paint, rinse with clear water;

– Let the material dry before storing it.

If you have applied a solvent-based paint, clean with the appropriate solvent, as indicated on the paint package:

– ventilate the room and wear household gloves when cleaning paint equipment;

– Clean with a solvent to remove traces of paint;

– Clean with soapy water;

– Rinse with clean water;

– Let dry before storing.

Note: Wear household gloves and ventilate the room when cleaning paint equipment with solvent.
